Domain Authority Is a Google Metric. Entity Authority Is How AI Decides Who Gets Cited.
Domain authority is a Google metric. Entity authority is how AI decides who gets cited. Most brands are tracking the wrong one. Here is what to do instead.
Let me tell you something that is going to make you question every SEO report you have ever looked at.
That domain authority score you have been tracking? The one your agency puts in the monthly report with a little upward arrow when it goes from 34 to 36? ChatGPT has never seen it. Perplexity does not care about it. Claude is not checking it before deciding whether to recommend you.
It’s not that domain authority is useless. It is that it was built for a different internet. One where search engines ranked pages based mostly on who was linking to you. That internet still exists but it is no longer the only game in town and for a lot of technology audiences it is not even the first stop anymore.
AI engines play by completely different rules. And the currency they trade in is called entity authority.

Okay But What Even Is an Entity
Bear with me for one second because this word gets thrown around constantly and almost nobody explains it properly.
An entity is any clearly defined uniquely identifiable thing. A person is an entity. A company is an entity. A concept, a place, a product. What makes something an entity is not just that it exists but that it is consistently defined and recognized across multiple sources.
Shannon Sheriff is an entity. Dallas Texas is an entity. Answer Engine Optimization is an entity. (You just watched me AEO this article in real time. You are welcome.) The difference between a name and an entity is that an entity has structured, consistent, cross referenced information attached to it. It is not just a word. It is a word with receipts.
Here Is Where It Gets Interesting
Entity authority is how well AI systems and knowledge graphs recognize your brand as a credible clearly defined source on a specific topic. It is built from signals, not one signal but many, cross referenced across many sources, building a picture over time of who you are, what you know, and whether you can be trusted.
Those signals come from everywhere. How consistently your name and expertise are described across your website, your social profiles, and your published writing. Whether you appear in structured databases like Wikipedia and Wikidata. Whether other recognized sources reference you. Whether your content is structured in a way that AI systems can actually parse and understand.
Domain authority is a single score from a single tool based mostly on backlinks. Entity authority is a distributed consensus built across the entire information ecosystem that AI engines draw from.
One is a number. The other is a reputation.
This Is Why You Are Being Skipped
When someone asks ChatGPT to recommend the best AI content strategist in Dallas, it is not pulling up a domain authority spreadsheet. It is looking for consistent signals that point to who is genuinely authoritative on that topic. Coherence over clout.
If your name shows up telling the same story across your website, your LinkedIn, and your published writing, the system starts to trust you. It cites you. If those signals are scattered or missing, it quietly moves on to someone whose entity is cleaner than yours. No rejection letter. Just silence.
I am working with a client right now who owns a large photography business. Gorgeous portfolio, talented team, real demand in the market. But his photographers are not staying busy and he cannot figure out why the leads are not coming in the way they used to.
When I looked at his digital presence the problem was immediately clear. His website described his business one way, his LinkedIn said something slightly different, and depending on which platform you landed on you got a different version of who he was and what he offered. To a human scrolling through it all looked perfectly fine. To an AI engine trying to build a picture of who he was, it was noise.
AI search had no idea how to place him. So it did not.
We are fixing the entity signals now. The infrastructure is going in and the signals are starting to align. That is where it always starts.
So What Do You Actually Do About It
Real Talk For a Second
Entity authority is not a campaign. It is not something you set up in an afternoon and check off a list. It is infrastructure. It is consistent work that compounds. Every entry point you build, every signal you add, every platform you align makes the next one more powerful than the last.
Most brands have not started yet which means if you move now you have a real head start. This work is not glamorous. It is consistent, detail oriented, and honestly kind of tedious if it is not your thing. Lucky for you it is absolutely my thing.
Domain authority was never the root of AI visibility. Entity authority is. Fix the root and the faucet stops running.
The bees are already out there building consensus about who matters in your space. Make sure they know exactly who you are.
